HURRICANE - Tupperware has come a long way from plastic bowls and leftover storage.
Yes, the company still sells those essentials, but in new and innovative ways and with the addition of new products, such as the stainless steel "Chef Series" cookware and knife sets.
Tupperware also sells "Escence" hand lotion, dish soap, and hand soap. Other items include seasoning blends, such as Southwest Chipotle and Cinnamon-Vanilla, and scone, cookie and cake mixes.
Tupperware Director Dee Hatfield, of Milton, opened the Hurricane store, Tupperware Gifts and More, about five weeks ago to have a bigger place to sell built-up inventory, meet with her and her husband's 40 active distributors, and have Tupperware parties. Inspiration Enterprises is the name of their distributorship.
Dee has been in Tupperware going on 30 years, through the provocation of three people she hardly knew. At the time, Dee was attending Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) school and had experience in private duty nursing. She wanted to gain enough experience, in school, to be able to help people before the ambulance arrived, as they live out in the country.
"I didn't think I wanted to sell Tupperware I wanted to help people," Dee said. "I really prayed about it."
At the time Dee was unemployed and raising two babies, and while she wanted to stay home with them, the bills were coming in fast. In addition, Ronnie's vacation pay was stolen out of their home. Through prayers and talks with Ronnie and her grandmother, Dee decided to give Tupperware a try. And what she discovered went beyond her wildest dreams.
"It is the best job I ever had in my life and I'm not kidding you," Dee said.
In addition to setting her own hours, she discovered the amount of money to be made exceeded any other job she had. Plus, Tupperware gave her 25 new cars, so far, including licenses, taxes, and tires; she Ronnie and their girls have traveled all over the world; and the best part for Dee, is that she gets to help people.
"They have helped me be more confident in helping other people, because there are other moms and other people who need confidence and money and who deserve to be happy," Dee said. "And they don't need to be stressed and I can do that for them. I can give them the same opportunity, which is the main reason I stay with it."
And Dee likes the Tupperware policy of a lifetime guarantee on their products. One of her distributor's Karon Parsons, of Branchland, said she never knew Tupperware to fail on their guarantee. Parsons met Dee when she was 18, over 20 years ago, and has been selling ever since.
"I like meeting people and they stand behind their product," Parsons said.
Like Parsons, Dee is in it for improving peoples' lives through the use of Tupperware products, Parsons said.
At parties, she discovers what peoples' needs are, such as organization where "Modular Mates" can really cut down on space and keep foods fresh. And, for Dee, it is also about forming friendships.
"I come into your home and we have a cup of coffee and I get to tell you what's new and how to help you with your life," Dee said.
Tupperware Gifts and More is located at #2 Davis Court in Hurricane. To sign up for a party, become a distributor or to purchase Tupperware, visit or call 304-562-2221.
