HOWARD CARSALEE

"BILL" ADKINS

Howard Carsalee "Bill" Adkins, 82, of Midkiff, W.Va., moved on to his Heavenly Home on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Huntington.

He was born November 14, 1927 at Nine Mile, W.Va., a son of the late Grover Cleveland and Lauretta Wilson Adkins.

Bill was a lifelong member of Camp Branch United Baptist Church, where he joyfully praised the Lord as choir director.

He was a Trustee for the Bethlehem Association and a retired conductor for C&O Railways where he worked for 38 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Odessa Mae "Roxy" Roy Adkins; son, Jeffery Alan Adkins; grandson, Gary Lee "J. R." Adkins Jr.; eight brothers, Hallie Adkins, Haskell Adkins, Sigmund "Tosa" Adkins, Shannon Adkins, Abe Adkins, Purleigh Adkins, Dennis Adkins and Husey Adkins; two sisters, Edith Adkins Prader and Thelma Lovejoy.

Survivors include his loving wife, Betty L. Bellomy Adkins; a daughter, Sandy (Donald) Johnson; a son, Gary Lee (Sherry) Adkins; step-daughter, LaDonna (Patrick) Flower; grandchildren, Stephanie Johnson, Brandon "B.J." (Natasha) Johnson, Kelly (Josh) Miller and Ryan Flower; his special love and darling angel, great-granddaughter, Keely Grace Miller; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, church family and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 7, 2010, at McGhee-Handley Funeral Home, West Hamlin, with the Rev. Bobby Burns, the Rev. Joe Dolin and the Rev. Mark Hatfield officiating. Burial followed at Fairview Memory Gardens, Hamlin.

LAWRENCE D. ADKINS

Lawrence D. Adkins, 80, of West Hamlin, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 10, 2010, at the Lincoln Nursing Home in Hamlin, W.Va., after a long illness.

Lawrence attended Center Point Baptist Church for over 70 years, where he was very faithful.

He was born July 11, 1929 in West Hamlin, W.Va., and was a 1949 graduate of Guyan Valley High School.

Lawrence was the son of the late Hubert and Ida Adkins of West Hamlin.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Bethel, Ralph and Darrell Adkins and one sister, Clarine Brewer.

Lawrence was self-employed and well known in Lincoln County as a skilled painter.

He was also an avid rabbit hunter.

Survivors include two sisters, Nina Hazelett of West Hamlin and Ouida Sansom of Barboursville; six brothers, William H. "Oakie" Adkins of Huntington, the Rev. Emmitt Adkins of Cottageville, W.Va., Earl Adkins of Ravenswood, Hubert Adkins Jr. of Alcoa, Tenn., Don and Larry O. Adkins, both from West Hamlin; and many nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to all of the nurses at the Lincoln Nursing Home for the wonderful care they took of Lawrence, and also, Hospice of Huntington.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 13, 2010, at McGhee-Handley Funeral Home, West Hamlin, W.Va., with his brother, the Rev. Emmitt Adkins and the Rev. Lenny Romans officiating.

Burial followed at Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock, W.Va. .

JOHN STERLING

BARNETT JR.

John Sterling Barnett Jr., 60, of Glenwood, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at his residence.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 7, 2010, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by Pastor Don Reynolds and Pastor Jason Thomas.

Burial followed in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

He was born November 24, 1949, in Cabell County, a son of John Sterling Barnett Sr. and Laura Belle Lewis Barnett of Salt Rock, W.Va.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during Vietnam.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #23, Point Pleasant, W.Va.

He served as Union President of Supresta.

He retired from Supresta and ACF Industries.

He also attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sharon Lee Smith Barnett; one daughter, Cheryl Barnett; one son, Bryan Barnett; three brothers, Dana, Phillip and Joey Barnett; and five grandchildren, Cory, Mikey, Josh, Tarra and Lindsey.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton.

ALICE JEAN CHANEY

Alice Jean Chaney, 48, of Ona, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 9, 2010.

She was born Aug. 8, 1961 in Huntington, W.Va., daughter of Richard Simmons of Huntington and the late Reeda Faye Rice Simmons.

She was a member of Mud River Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Norris Chaney; one daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Joshua Sharp of Cross Lanes, W.Va.; one son, Lee Wellman of Barboursville, W.Va.; three stepchildren, Nathan Chaney and his wife, Stacey of Illinois, James Chaney of Illinois and Tina Escue of Barboursville; one sister, Betty Savage and her husband, Mike of Tennessee; three brothers, Danny Simmons of Tennessee, Darrell Simmons and Rick Simmons, both of Huntington; two step-grandchildren, Kayla Escue and Jonathan Chaney; and one nephew, Dustin Savage.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Craig Coster.

Burial followed in Bowen Cemetery.

DON ELLIS

Don Ellis, 89, of Barboursville, passed peacefully on May 8, 2010, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House.

Don was born Feb. 27, 1921, in Logan County, a son of the late William and Annie Ellis.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Wilson, Tennis and Everett Ellis; and special family members, sisters-in-law, Anna Lambert and Mary Eplin; Richard Mayo, and Joe Catanzarite.

Don's greatest enjoyment in life was his family, especially his loving wife, Zula of 62 years; daughter, Trina Smith; and son-in-law, Don Smith; special grandson, Joshua Smith; son, Larry Ellis; and daughter-in-law, Melanie Ellis.

He served in the Armed Forces from January 1942 to November 1945 as a member of the 103rd Medical Batallion, Company C, in the Rhineland and Central European theaters during World War II.

Following an honorable discharge, he drove for Continental Trailways until retiring in 1985.

He was a proud member of Lewis Memorial Baptist Church.

A friend to all, Don was an avid birdwatcher with a love for nature.

He loved food, never missing an opportunity to share a meal and warm conversation with his family and dear friends.

Throughout his illness, he remained a tower of strength for his family, who alongside the wonderful people of Hospice of Huntington, provided full-time care for the final months of his life.

Special thanks to Jo Ghiz and Margie Copley, and his in-home caregivers, Delta and Yanet, with whom he came to share a special relationship.

A celebration of Don's life took place on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, with Dr. David Lemming officiating.

Burial followed at White Chapel Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be given to the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, who have filled our lives with a unique caring and peace of mind during this time.

J. EVERETT GILLISPIE

J. Everett Gillispie, of Hurricane, W.Va., departed this life on May 10, 2010 at Cabell-Huntington Hospital, Huntington, W.Va.

Everett was a member of Hurricane Church of Christ.

He graduated from Marshall University after serving his country proudly in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He retired from Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation.

Surviving are his wife, Audrey Chapman (Dickerson); sister, Edie Reynolds; daughter, Melanie Shell (Richard); step-children, Wayne Dickerson (Rebecca), Tanya Dostall (Les), Lisa Felumlee (Randy) and Brian Dickerson; grandchildren, Justin and Chandler Shell; Bryce, Eric, Emily, Will, Evelyn, Bethany and Amy Dickerson, Garrett and Star Dostall, Rader, Ramen and Rylan Felumlee, and Demi Hardy; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding Everett in death are his first wife, Evelyn, and daughter, Lisa Dawn; brothers, Herschel and Carl; sisters, Dolly, Dortha, Vivian, Lula and Goldie.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 12, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton by Minister Toney Stowers.

HARVEY ALBERT GLOVER

Harvey Albert Glover, 72, of Milton, passed away Thursday, May 6, 2010, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Huntington.

Funeral service were conducted Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Pastor Charlie Norris officiating.Burial followed in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.

He was born June 25, 1937, in Cabell County, W.Va., a son of Martha Meadows Glover and the late Clydie Glover.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Alice J. Glover; and a son, Dexter R. Glover.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Donald Lucas of Milton; four sisters, Carolyn Adkins, Bonnie Keeton, Kathleen Jenkins and Pauline Workman; four brothers, Carl Glover, Bill Glover, Em Glover and Randal Glover; grandchildren, Anthony W. and Alicia L. Chapman, Amy L. Glover, Todd A. Glover and Chad A. Glover Davis; step-grandchildren, Donald S. Lucas, Meghan M. Lucas and Zachary T. Lucas; one great-grandchild, Donavan B. DONALD LEE JOHNSON

Donald Lee Johnson, 78, of Huntington, passed away Friday, May 7, 2010, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House.

He was born June 5, 1931 in Huntington, a son of the late James C. and Eloise Dean Johnson.

His brother, James C. Johnson Jr., also preceded him in death.

Donald retired from Huntington Alloys, after 40 years, as a crane operator having worked last in the refinery.

He was Methodist by faith, was a former Cabell County Constable, a Kentucky Colonel, former member of the Democratic Executive Committee, and belonged to Local 40 United Steelworkers and the INCO Quarter Century Club.

Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Dorothy Elizabeth Davis Johnson; two daughters and sons-in-law, JoAnn and Wayne Perry of Barboursville, and Brenda Lee and Tony Chapman of Huntington; a son, Rocky Lee Johnson of Huntington; two grandchildren, Ronald Lee Meehling II, his wife, Carrie Meehling, and Summer Chapman, all of Huntington.

Graveside services were conducted Monday, May 10, 2010, at the Woodmere Memorial Park Abbey of Remembrance, with Eddie Bradshaw officiating.

Burial followed in Woodmere Memorial Park.

MARY JEWELDEAN

"JERRY" MCCOMAS

Mary Jeweldean "Jerry" McComas, of Barboursville, passed away peacefully at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington, Wednesday, May 5, 2010.

She is now with the Lord and her beloved husband, James D. McComas.

She was born January 2, 1921 in Milton, W.Va., daughter of the late Okel K. and Lillie C. Watson McCallister.

She was a retired inspector from Owens-Illinois.

Jerry was a member of the Highlawn Baptist Church and the Koinonia Sunday School Class, which she enjoyed so much.

She took great pride in her 1,000 volunteer hours at St. Mary's Hospital.

She is survived by five children; three sons: Donald L. and Vivian McComas of Tahiti, Michael D. and Carole "Cookie" McComas of Keiser, Ore., James R. and Gretchen McComas of Solomons, Md.; two daughters: Sandra J. McComas of Indianapolis, Ind., and Judith A. McComas of Veradale, Wash. Jerry had eight grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a special niece, Lisa Stewart of Hagerstown, Md., and several other nieces and nephews.

After giving up her driver's license in 2007, she wishes to express a very special thanks to her brother, O.K. McCallister of Huntington, her sister-in-law, Betty Poynter of Barboursville, a special neighbor, Mike Sperry of Barboursville, and a very special granddaughter, Kim Blanton of Rush, Ky.

The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to Hospice of Huntington for their loving care and help.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Huntington.

NORMAN EDWARD ROOD

Norman Edward Rood, of Barboursville, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at his residence.

He was born on November 3, 1921, a son of the late Milton Rood and Rhoda Rood.

He grew up in Huntington on 30th Street East - around the corner from the watchful eyes of Lula Mae Keeling, his maternal grandmother.

In 1942, upon his graduation from East High, he enlisted in the Army and served as Sergeant with the 1177 Engineers in New Caledonia and Guadalcanal in the South Pacific.

Upon his discharge from the Army at Bruns General Hospital in Santa Fe, N.M., on April 3, 1945, he enrolled at WV University.

On Nov. 22, l946 he married Mabel Rosalee Beall, daughter of Charles and Una Beall.

In 1952 he graduated from WVU College of Law.

For 57 years, Mabel's care and affection enabled him to attain the good life.

He is survived by their daughters, Markie Johnson and her husband, Michael, Deborah Rood and her husband, Andrew Grimes, Pamela Mills and Theresa Chambers and her husband, John, and by seven grandchildren, Josh Chambers, Kayla Chambers, Sarah Mills, Katie Mills, Andy Mills, Matthew Johnson and his wife, Megan, and Barrett Johnson and his wife, Dania. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Beulah, and brothers, Sterling, Clarence, Gene, Fred and Raymond.

A private funeral service was conducted by the family on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at White Chapel Memorial Gardens.

CHARLES WILLIAM

STEVENSON

Charles William Stevenson, 78, of Barboursville, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2010.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 8, 2010, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Bishop Tony Edmonds.

Burial followed in White Chapel Memorial Gardens.

He was born June 15, 1931 in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late Charles Clifton Stevenson and Willa Almira Grayson Stevenson.

He was also preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had served in the National Guard.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Beatty Stevenson; two daughters, Yvonne M. Dillon of Louisville, Ky., and Charlotte K. Combs and her husband, Steve of Orange Park, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Iris "Vicky" Stevenson of Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va., and Charles R. and Lynne Stevenson of Huntington; ten grandchildren and twenty-six great grandchildren.

JULIAN BAIN TURNER

Julian Bain Turner, 35, of Huntington, passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington.

He was born February 22, 1975, in Grand Forks, N.D., where he lived for 3 years.

His family also lived in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Beckley, Teays Valley and Huntington, W.Va.

He was a graduate of Huntington High School and Marshall University.

He received a Masters Degree in Spanish from Ohio University.

At the time of his death, he was an Instructor of Spanish at The College of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, N.C.

He previously taught Spanish at Ohio University and Dodge City Community College in Dodge City, Kan.

While an undergraduate student at Marshall, he studied Spanish abroad in Madrid, Spain.

Following his graduation from Marshall, he taught for two years in Santiago, Chile, and traveled extensively throughout South America and Europe.

In South America, he was scheduled to participate in a Fulbright grant to study native South American cultures and political influences, but the grant was cancelled due to safety concerns.

Bain was an accomplished guitar player, enjoyed traveling and was a huge Marshall Thundering Herd fan.

Bain was a Christian by faith.

He is survived by his parents, Art and June Turner of Huntington; a brother and sister-in law, Jared and Crystal Turner of Cross Lanes; one nephew, Braden Kyle Turner of Cross Lanes; a special girlfriend, Erin Kessler of Charlotte, N.C.; a grandfather and step-grandmother, Butch and Jenny Sturgill of Knott County, Ky.; uncles, Bill Sturgill of Lexington, Ky., and Ed Williams of Leburn, Ky.; aunts, Lavenia Johnson of Cincinnati, Ohio, Roberta Stinette of Rochelle, Ill., Joyce Miller of Columbus, Ohio, Betty Smith and Peggy Sue Cox, both of Leburn, Ky.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ruth Turner Sturgill and Arthur "Buster" Turner; maternal grandparents, Matilda and Curt Williams. Also preceding him in death, was a very special first cousin, Angela Sue Cox. Bain had many friends, including long time friends, Kelly and Chris Caudill.

Funeral services were held May 8, at the Enslow Park Presbyterian Church in Huntington with pastor Chris Perkins, formerly of Knott County, Ky., officiating.

SANDRA MARIE WARGO

Sandra Marie Wargo, 68, of Barboursville, W.Va., passed away Thursday, April 22, in her home.

"Sandy" was born June 25, 1941, in Cedar Grove, W.Va., a daughter of the late Pete and Juanita Wargo.

She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, D. W. and Edna Ramsey.

Sandy was an advocate for mental healthcare, serving a long career as a registered nurse certified in psychiatry, and retired her services from the Huntington State Hospital.

She was an avid animal lover and was a friend to all animals.

A graveside memorial service was held at Bowling Cemetery in Winfield on Monday, May 10, 2010. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, is in charge of arrangements.
